Dr Henry Mayalla is a cardiologist in the Department of Cardiology at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam. He practises at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI), a tertiary cardiovascular centre that serves as the cardiac teaching hospital for MUHAS. His clinical work covers adult cardiology, echocardiography and the care of patients with heart rhythm disorders. In the scientific literature he also publishes as Henry Anselmo Mayala.
His research looks at the heart conditions he sees in daily practice. In hypertension, he has studied medication adherence and blood pressure control, obstructive sleep apnoea in hypertensive patients, and left ventricular hypertrophy in hypertensive heart disease using an echocardiographic registry. He led a study that screened professional athletes with electrocardiography and echocardiography for risks linked to sudden cardiac death. He also contributed to the MOYO study of non-ischaemic dilated cardiomyopathy in Tanzanian patients and to research on introducing genetic testing and counselling for cardiomyopathies. His other publications cover coronary microvascular dysfunction, the development of catheter ablation for arrhythmias in Tanzania, psychiatric problems in patients receiving permanent pacemakers, and the role of international missions in coronary artery bypass surgery at JKCI.
Dr Mayalla holds MD and PhD degrees. Before joining JKCI in 2014, he was a specialist physician in the cardiovascular medicine department of Muhimbili National Hospital. At JKCI he has worked in adult cardiology, clinical support services and electrophysiology and pacing. He is among the institute physicians acknowledged in a published account of how sustainable cardiovascular care was built at a public teaching hospital in Tanzania.
He works with clinicians and researchers in Tanzania and abroad, including a cardiac electrophysiologist from Ain Shams University in Egypt on arrhythmia care. He is listed with the MUHAS team in the AI4HF partnership on heart failure. He also sits on the organising committee of CardioTan Imaging 2026, a cardiac imaging conference held by JKCI, where he is a featured speaker.
