Practical Electrocardiogram (ECG) - Short Course -30 Credit Points

An electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most ordered investigations in cardiovascular medicine practice. This is due to it being a cheap, non-invasive and widely available test. Although cardiology has much evolved, with newer and complicated investigations, the ECG has remained one of the most important investigations. The test is mandatory in the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction, a life-threatening cardiac emergency. Furthermore, all cardiac conditions require an ECG to compliment the clinical and other investigations in making definitive diagnoses. With increase in diseases of lifestyle in our communities, more clinicians find themselves facing more patients with cardiovascular conditions in their day to day clinics, and often order an ECG as part of the baseline investigations. However, interpretation and making use of the ECG findings requires skills and knowledge. Unfortunately, many clinicians find it difficult and are not confident in ECG interpretation on a range of cardiac conditions. This could partly be resulting from limited exposure to ECG interpretation during clinical medicine training, but also lack of continuous medical education in this area. This course, therefore, intends to furnish trainees with the practical knowledge and skills to confidently conduct, interpret and report on an ECG taken from a wide range of clinical situations and commonly encountered cardiovascular conditions

Basic Echocardiography - Short Course

Echocardiography has revolutionized how we diagnose cardiac conditions by providing real-time high resolution images of the heart and large blood vessels. This has made possible for quick and precise diagnosis of almost all cardiac conditions. However, performing and interpreting echocardiogram needs special training in order to obtain optimum images and to correctly interpret the findings. This course intends to furnish trainees with the basic knowledge on echocardiography and equip them with skills to conduct, interpret and report basic echocardiogram examinations of a wide range of commonly encountered cardiovascular conditions.
