Dr Lulu Said Fundikira is a consultant radiologist and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Radiology and Imaging in the School of Medicine at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Dar es Salaam. Her work brings together clinical radiology, teaching and research, with a particular interest in cardiovascular and thoracic imaging.
Much of her recent research concerns dilated cardiomyopathy in sub-Saharan Africa. This includes a systematic review of its risk factors and prevalence, the characterisation of non-ischaemic dilated cardiomyopathy in a Tanzanian cohort through the MOYO study, the yield of family screening in a low-income setting, and the barriers to equitable genetic testing and counselling for cardiomyopathies in Tanzania. She has also contributed to studies on infective endocarditis, rheumatic mitral valve stenosis, cardiac computed tomography in children with congenital heart defects, and cardiovascular screening of professional athletes at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute. Her wider work covers delays in the diagnostic evaluation of breast cancer among Tanzanian women, building neuroimaging capacity for patients with sickle cell anaemia, chest radiographic findings in pulmonary tuberculosis among adults with and without HIV, and kidney disease in adults on tenofovir-based second-line antiretroviral therapy.
Dr Fundikira holds MD, MMed and PhD degrees. She previously served as Head of the Department of Radiology and Imaging at MUHAS. During that time she supported the introduction of interventional radiology training for residents with partners from Yale University. She was also a co-investigator, alongside colleagues at Muhimbili National Hospital, on a breast imaging study funded through the UCSF-MUHAS Cancer Collaboration.
She takes part in supervising and training radiology residents and has presented on building subspecialty radiology training in Tanzania through RSNA educational programmes in Africa. She has served as president of the Tanzania Radiology Society. She has spoken about the aims of the subspecialty radiology conferences held at MUHAS, which hosts an RSNA Global Learning Center. She has also co-authored work on building equitable global radiology partnerships with low- and middle-income countries. Her publications have received 137 citations, and she has an h-index of 4.
