Echocardiography has revolutionized how we diagnose cardiac conditions by providing real-time high resolution images of the heart and large blood vessels. This has made possible for quick and precise diagnosis of almost all cardiac conditions. However, performing and interpreting echocardiogram needs special training in order to obtain optimum images and to correctly interpret the findings. This course intends to furnish trainees with the basic knowledge on echocardiography and equip them with skills to conduct, interpret and report basic echocardiogram examinations of a wide range of commonly encountered cardiovascular conditions.

Good morning, Professor. Looking back on this week, I realise I no longer see an echocardiogram the way I did in week 1. The most useful lesson for me was learning to pause before calling something abnormal; normal variants like the Eustachian valve or crista terminalis appear in up to 1–3% of studies, and recognising them takes patience, experience, and knowledge. I also found myself thinking differently about measurements: it's not just about getting an EF as the number, but about doing it the right way, tracing the endocardium carefully for Simpson's, keeping the M-mode cursor perpendicular to the septum. When I learned to score the 16 segments and compute the Wall Motion Score Index, it suddenly connected the image to the coronary anatomy in a way that showed me that knowing coronary anatomy is also crucial to making a diagnosis. What I hope to carry into the hands-on sessions is to optimise the image first, measure systematically, and confirm every finding in more than one window and even with different transducers before committing to a diagnosis, to avoid misdiagnosis and confusion. Also, I will build a consistent scanning routine that, for every study: first a qualitative sweep looking for normal variants (Eustachian valve, crista terminalis, lipomatous septum) before I label anything abnormal; then chamber measurements using the correct method for the question; then global function (biplane Simpson's for LV, TAPSE + tissue Doppler for RV, etc.); and a segment-by-segment wall motion assessment with the WMSI calculation. I think an accurate echo comes less from memorising numbers and more from the discipline, experience and knowledge we bring to each study, stating the method used alongside the value, so that the number always carries its context.

Greatings, Thank You Prof for the updates and for quiz 1, at first, was getting difficult to log in but later on , with the help of my fellow I was able to log in and complete the week 1 quiz. I also appreciate the organization of the materils, and the feedbacks given in this forum, I enjoyed all the sessions including the anatomy of the heart and the blood vessels which added some more knowledge on top of the tradditional heart anatomy that I've ever come across before this session. The best echocardiographic view doesnot depend only on the sonographer experience but also on adhering to all the basic echocardiographic principles (incl. good preparation of both, the machine and the patient, and all manouvres done during Echocardiography). I also learned about proper care and handling of the Echocardiography machine, starting with ourselves as users. We should to follow the recommended guidelines and procedures, such as PPM.

Hello Professor, I'm delighted to join this course, before commencing this ECHO course, i didn't have a clear clarity on the ECHO reflectivity, and good positioning technique and windows, which entirely helps in obtaining good ECHO images. By now so far, I'm happy about the lecturers given, they are very clear, easy to learn and well organised slides. I would like to comment on the ECHO window lecture by Prof Chillo; As it is important to position the patient well as to acquire a good image. For instance in PLAX WINDOW, a patient has to lie on his/her left decubitus to get a good image than when in supine, as this helps to attain the echo image well by not tilting more posterior, on display images may appear with for shortening, we can get more of the apex than a true image with RV, IVS, LV and posterior wall of the LV well displayed. Hello Professor, the most important step in obtaining a good echocardiographic image is to understand the anatomy of the heart and its structures. Knowing different windows also helps determine what to look for. This has really changed my mind indeed! ECHO windows, view,& positioning: from positioning the client to obtain proper views helps a lot on better images, different techniques to perform on different views needs skilled personnel and much practices on it which needs the anatomy beforehand. On how to take care of the machine its important for its longer use, i have learnt a lot. Thank you a lot for simplified lectures, and well understood.

Hello Professor, hello my fellow students am glad to be here in this platform for the purpose of learning and acquiring knowledge on Basic Echocardiography imaging. I have gone through the recent session and have gained some ideals The most important thing to obtain good echocardiography imaging is Proper patient positioning and the choice of the probe also how to place the probe during examination in order to obtain good standard views, so image quality depends on the operator’s knowledge, techniques and the type of machine especially the one with good resolution During examination appropriate depth, gain, focus and width is more important for good image Adjusting the machine settings for each patient is important depending on the size /morphology of the patient is mandatory however good contact to the probe should be maintained with adequate ultrasound gel hence too much gel will reduce the efficiency of the probe I have learnt how to care the probe and the machine in general My thinking has changed after learning that to acquire a good echocardiography image you have to understand the normal anatomy of the heart first then differentiate from the pathological one to have a proper diagnosis. So anatomical knowledge, Patient positioning, correct probe manipulation, machine optimization and continuous assessment of the image quality is the must to know And I have understood that small change in angling the probe, rotation or depth significantly will improve my visualization of cardiac structures for accuracy interpretation Am eager to reach on the work on hand session for gaining more knowledge and competence

Hallo Professor I would like to sincerely express my appreciation for the recent sessions on the Physics of Ultrasound and Echocardiography, as well as the Basic Echocardiography session on Probes and Choices. I found both sessions highly informative, well-organized, and particularly helpful in strengthening my foundation in echocardiography. The session on ultrasound physics was especially valuable to me because it introduced and clarified fundamental concepts that are essential for understanding how ultrasound imaging works. I gained a much better understanding of sound waves, frequency, wavelength, propagation, attenuation, acoustic impedance, and the interaction between ultrasound and tissues.I also found the explanation of the different echocardiographic imaging modes, including B-mode, M-mode The discussion of artifacts was also important in helping me appreciate why some findings may appear on an ultrasound image and how they should be understood. The session on echocardiography probes and their selection further expanded my understanding. I learned about the different types of transducers used in echocardiography, including phased-array, 3D, transesophageal, and intracardiac probes, and how their design and applications differ according to the clinical purpose. I particularly appreciated learning how probe selection influences image acquisition and the type of examination that can be performed. Overall, these sessions have significantly improved my understanding and confidence in echocardiography. Concepts that initially seemed unfamiliar are now becoming much clearer, and I feel better prepared to understand the practical aspects of image acquisition and interpretation. I would also like to thank you for the quiz and learning activities, which provided an excellent opportunity to assess my understanding and identify areas where I still need to improve. I look forward to the upcoming sessions and to continuing to develop my knowledge and practical skills in echocardiography under your guidance. Each session was delivered with remarkable clarity, and although the audio volume was occasionally a little low, I was nonetheless able to follow along comfortably. These sessions have been immensely helpful in building my understanding of echocardiography. Prior to them, I had virtually no background in the physics of ultrasound or echocardiography, including data acquisition and storage, and the proper care of the echo machine. Hello my colleagues, hopefully you are doing well; Before this course, I thought that the most important thing in obtaining a good echocardiographic image was using a good ultrasound machine and getting a clear image. After this week's lessons, my understanding has changed. I learned that obtaining a reliable ECHO examination depends on several factors, including correct patient positioning, proper transducer placement, image optimization, and the use of appropriate echocardiographic windows. The lecture on Echocardiographic Windows influenced me the most. I learned that the parasternal, apical, subcostal, and suprasternal windows provide different views of the heart. Choosing the correct window is important because it allows the sonographer/cardiographer to visualize specific cardiac structures accurately and obtain reliable measurements. I also learned that even a small change in probe position or angle can improve image quality significantly. This lecture helped me understand that a reliable ECHO examination is not only about having good equipment but also about knowing how to use the correct windows and techniques to obtain accurate diagnostic information. Not only that but also care of equipment contribute much on image quality production. Thank you 🙏

Greetings everyone, I appreciate the opportunity to share my insights and reflections on this week's lectures. Before starting this course, i believed that the obtaining a good echocardiographic image depends heavily on the operator's skills and techniques while scanning however, the lectures have helped me learn that there are a lot of factors to consider with reference to this context. The lecture on Echo-reflectivity has been quiet an eye opener to my end, i have learned how the concept of Acoustic impedance affects sound wave transmission and reflection and that dense materials will have greater acoustic impedance which will make them more echogenic and appear whiter on the screen and that how we can pick up on pathologies such as calicifications and effusions among others. For instance a calcified valve will be denser and thus have higher acoustic impedance and hence appear whiter as compared to other non-calcified structures, also the understanding of this concept has helped me understand the reason why use the echo windows so as to avoid structures with greater acoustic impedance that will interfere with sound wave transmission due to greater resistance for example bones which ahve high acoustic impedance. Another interesting new thing i have learned is about the attitudinally and morphological methods of describing the anatomy of the heart. This wasn't easy to grasp at first but after carefully revising around it, it all made sense, that there are situations such as in TAPVR where the pulmonary veins drain into the systemic veins or right atrium instead o fthe left atrium and there fpr the without understanding this concept we can mistake structures. But the morphological descriptions helps to define the structures more accurately. I completely agree with my colleague's take on the choice of probe to use and scanning technique being crucial during echocardiography. Understanding how the various arrangements of the piezoelectric elements can offer different probes their beam direction and use overall, the different types of scanning techniques ,also the importance of proper positioning of the patient to get the appropriate image. Hello everyone Thankyou for this opportunity to share my thoughts. Before starting this course i thought that obtaining a good ECHO imaging only depend on a correct probe selection with scaning techique, but after this good lectures i realise that not only probe selection and scanning techique can give a good ECHO imaging. After this week my thingking changed and i learned that patient position, knowledge of utrasound physics, scaning window combine with probe selection as well as knowing the anatomy of the heart are very important on obtaining the image quality. Good afternoon, everyone i would like to appreciate nices sessions of this week, as they have a great impact in my knowledge with regards to ECHO,as before this course i thought the most important factors in getting a good echo image was using a high-quality USS machine and having basic ECHO skills. After completing this week sessions my understanding has changed , and i now know that obtaining good echocardiogram images depends largely on the sonographer knowledge of cardiac anatoy, correct positioning of client, appropriate probe positioning, and appropriate ECHO window the lecture on echo window ,views and patient posiotining had the greatest impact on my understanding as it demonstrate even with best echo machine, poor positioning and incorrect echo window can results to poor images and incorrect interpretation,I also learned that adjusting the patient's position, such as using the left lateral decubitus position, can significantly improve image quality.
